The Current Light Flashes is West Florida Electric Cooperative's informational newsletter. CLF is distributed monthly to WFECA's 19,000 customers and paid subscribers in Calhoun, Holmes, Jackson and Washington counties. You can get your copy by mail, in person at any WFECA district office, or view our online version.
Economic Development
At West Florida Electric Cooperative, we recognize that one of the most important decisions you will make is the location of your company's new facility.
West Florida Electric operates an active Economic Development Program for Calhoun, Holmes, Jackson, and Washington Counties located in the Florida Panhandle.
Our primary function as community marketing representatives is to provide business and industrial prospects with current and comprehensive data to assist in and promote favorable location decisions.
We provide you with the necessary information to make a location decision. We help arrange financing and other low-cost loan programs. We provide you with local contacts. We work with your engineering team to design the specific power requirements you need for maximum performance at the least possible cost. We put you in touch with state-funded programs such as job training assistance, export assistance and tax incentives. Electric Energy Sales and Services
West Florida Electric Cooperative has competitive electrical rates which are well below the national average.
In addition we have made a commitment not to raise rates and have implemented measures in an effort to reduce rates. Our outage response time is one of the lowest in the state of Florida and we are poised to continue to provide dependable, low cost electric service.

Electric Water HeatersWe will give a free, high-efficiency, slow recovery, super insulated electric water heater to co-op members as a replacement for a gas water heater.
In addition, the cooperative will give a water heater to any member whose home qualifies for our Energy Efficient Home Program (as outlined below).
Requirements for Free Gas Replacements
1. The water heater must be installed in the members full-time residence.
2. Proper installation is required.
3. The Cooperative's water heater must replace a gas water heater.
Energy Efficient Home Requirements for Free Electric Water Heater
1. The member must install a certified heat pump in the home.
2. The home must conform to the specific maximum heat gain allowed which is 11 BTU's per square foot for a new home and 15 BTU's per square foot for an existing home. Heat gain is determined by running a "Manual J" load calculation on the home.
3. Proper installation is required (Co-op personnel will inspect the installation).
Water Heater Sales
In addition, the cooperative has a variety of models and styles of high-efficiency electric water heaters at very competitive rates. Financing is available for members and each unit comes with a lifetime warranty.

Free Energy Audits
Any member experiencing an unusually high electric bill or that is interested in energy conservation tips may request a free energy audit. A cooperative representative will come to your home to perform a walk through audit and obtain additional information through a questionnaire. This information will allow them to pinpoint any problem areas as well as make recommendations concerning ways to reduce your electric bill.
Free Duct Design
Upon request cooperative personnel will design a duct system for any member installing a Heat Pump central heating and cooling system in their new or existing home. Designs are made in accordance with "Manual D" duct design standards in order to insure proper air flow to every area of the home.
Emergency Response System
We are proud to provide the Mainstreet Messenger Emergency response system. This system is designed to alert family, friends and any emergency response center such as 911 in case of medical or other emergencies. Financing is available.
With the Mainstreet Messenger emergency response system you have the versatility of community or professional monitoring. In the community monitoring mode, with just the press of a button, up to four phone numbers of family, neighbors and friends can be dialed repeatedly until someone responds to the emergency. An emergency response center such as "911" can be programmed as one of the four numbers if the emergency service is available in your area.
If professional monitoring is needed, for a nominal fee the unit can be programmed to dial the "Cooperative Response Center" (CRC). CRC is a 24 hour emergency response center designed to dispatch emergency services such as police, fire and rescue. The center maintains detailed information on the individual that is accessed by computer as soon as the call comes in.

Energy Efficient Home Program
WFECA, in conjunction with its power supplier Alabama Electric Cooperative, is offering an Energy Efficient Home Program. The program was established in order to promote energy efficiency specifically for individuals who are building new homes or remodeling existing ones.
The benefits of a Energy Efficient Home are impressive to say the least. The member will immediately begin to see a savings on the use of electricity in the form of lower electric bills. Because it is a certified energy-efficient home, the dwelling will be worth more on the market if the member ever wants to sell the home. The Energy Efficient Home is a well-built structure that provides year-round comfort and economy.
Satellite TV Sales and Programming
West Florida Electric offers the best in quality home entertainment. Contact our Member Services Department for details on C-Band programming and digital satellite system sales.
We provide C-Band satellite programming to members and non-members who own a C-Band satellite dish system. A variety of programming at an economical price is available on a subscription basis and can be added to members monthly electric bill.
The Co-op also sells and leases 18 inch Satellite Dish Systems. The DSS system is the latest technology in satellite home entertainment and offers a variety of programming choices for your viewing pleasure.
Surge Protection
With Florida being the lightning capitol of the world, surge protection should be a standard feature in every home. With this in mind WFECA offers a "whole house" surge protection package. A meter base protector can be purchased or leased and additional units may be purchased to plug directly into appliances and electronic equipment.
