WFEC list accomodates special needs

Does someone in your household have a medical condition for which electric service is vital? If so, you should know about West Florida Electric Cooperative’s Medical Priority List.

The Medical Priority List allows WFEC to give advance notice of a planned outage to members who have a medical need for uninterrupted electric service. When WFEC must de-energize a portion of its system for line or equipment upgrades, the Co-op issues a public announcement to local radio stations. Then, WFEC makes extra efforts to contact members on the Medical Priority List because of their urgent need for notification of an upcoming scheduled outage.

However, in the case of unplanned outages, such as those caused by severe weather, the list has no bearing on the order in which WFEC restores electric service to members. Because WFEC’s crews must begin repairing lines at the substations and work their way outward, power is restored soonest to members living closest to the substations. During a widespread unplanned outage, it simply isn’t possible for crews to restore service to scattered individual residences.

For this reason, members who must have uninterrupted electric service should have an alternate power source or emergency plan. WFEC offers portable, standby and PTO-drive generators in a variety of sizes at affordable prices, and financing is available with approved credit. If you don’t have a back-up generator, make arrangements with friends or family to move to another location should an outage occur.

For placement on WFEC’s Medical Priority List, contact your nearest WFEC district office or call 1-800-342-7400 toll-free.You’ll be required to submit a letter from a physician or other health care provider explaining the medical need for continuous electric service.. Be sure the letter also includes the person’s whose name is on the WFEC account and the correct phone number for that account.
