Lessons for life

Teen Power teaches middle school students about energy use Local students and teachers will benefit from an innovative new energy education program West Florida Electric Cooperative is introducing. Teen Power is designed to promote energy awareness among middle school students through music, cartoons and interactive web pages. The program is Internet active, but workbooks are available for schools that do not have Internet access. Focusing on energy conservation, Teen Power will guide students in performing experiments about energy usage and conducting energy surveys of their schools. Although the program is science-based, it includes activities that encompass almost every classroom subject, taking into consideration that all students learn differently. Various activities allow students to benefit individually from learning in the way that is suitable for them. Holmes County middle school teachers recently attended the first in a series of meetings WFEC is conducting to introduce Teen Power to area teachers. In a drawing at the Oct. 15 session, Barbara Rutledge, of Bonifay Middle School, won $200 for her school’s science department. WFEC will hold similar meetings with teachers from Washington, Jackson and Calhoun County middle schools. For additional information about Teen Power, call WFEC Communications Supervisor John Thornton at 850-263-3231 or 800-342-7400.
