New VSOs ready to help

Two new veterans service officers are now assisting area residents who’ve served our country. In Holmes County, Joe Marsh has taken the reins from Dan Woods, who retired earlier this year, while in Jackson County, John Turner is filling the position Ray Carroll had vacated several months ago.

Himself a veteran of the Gulf War and the Liberian Conflict in South Africa, Marsh served in the Marine Corps from 1988 through 1994. Before becoming Holmes County’s veterans service officer the first of April, he worked as the county’s Special Projects Manager for approximately eight years. Except during his military service, he has been a lifelong Holmes County resident.

"I’ve had a lot of different jobs in my life, but I believe this is my calling," said Marsh. "I consider it an honor to serve the veterans. I hope to improve their quality of life and to get them the benefits they deserve."

Turner served approximately 20 years in Personnel Technical Administration before his retirement from the Army as Chief Warrant Officer III in June 1991. Prior to his return to Ft. Rucker, Ala., where he served until his retirement, he was stationed in Italy, Germany, Korea and elsewhere in the U. S.

The Cottondale native began his current position in mid-March. "I hope to help all veterans to understand and take advantage of their benefits," he said. "You’d be surprised how many don’t."

The Holmes County Veterans Service Office is open from 7 a.m. until 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday at 812 South Waukesha St. in Bonifay, and the phone number is 547-2897. The Jackson County VSO is open from 7:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. at 2851 Jefferson St., south of the Jackson County Courthouse, in Marianna, and the phone numbers are 718-0003 or 718-0004.
