Remember our fallen heroes May 31
When Memorial Day arrives the last Monday in May each year, many who have benefitted from the ultimate sacrifice of others forget what the "Memorial" part of the day’s name means. A long weekend at the beach or a barbeque often takes precedence over a visit to a cemetery or memorial, or other reverent remembrance of the men and women who have given their lives on behalf of our country. That’s why the Disabled American Veterans of Jackson County and the American Legion of Marianna and Sneads invite the public, particularly area veterans, to join them in honoring fallen brothers and sisters in arms Monday, May 31.
During a ceremony starting at 8 a. m. on the east side of the Marianna Counrthouse, a DAV member and a Marianna American Legion member will join in placing a wreath on the eternal flame at the courthouse. The Sneads American Legion will post the colors and provide an honor guard. Jackson County Veterans Service Officer Ray Carroll will lead the ceremony, and Jackson County Elections Supervisor Sylvia Stephens will sing the National Anthem and other patriotic music.
"This is not just for disabled veterans or American Legion members -- We invite everyone who wants to join in honoring those who’ve lost their lives protecting our freedom" said DAV Chapter 22 Commander A. C. Miles. " We’d especially like to see all area vets come pay their respects, because we’re all brothers and sisters in arms while we’re in the service. We should stay brothers and sisters to help each other and the community."
