65 years, 65 memories
To commemorate West Florida Electric Cooperative’s 65th anniversary, we continue our list of 65 randomly-selected highlights from Cooperative history. We at WFEC hope you’ll be entertained, inspired and informed as you join us in remembering some of the events that have shaped our co-op and our community.
14. WFEC’s linemen return to work after WWII – 1946
As the post-war economy booms, area residents are buying all types of electrical goods. WFEC hires additional employees to accommodate the growth and purchases land for a new office south of Graceville.
15. WFEC begins round-the-clock service center hours – 1986
The Co-op adds personnel to answer customer calls during evening and weekend hours. Previously, members experiencing power outages or other problems during after-office hours have directly telephoned the lineman designated on duty. WFEC has published the linemen’s duty schedule and phone numbers in Current Light Flashes each month. The linemen’s wives have acted as "unofficial" dispatchers, some becoming almost as familiar as their husbands with the locations of various lines throughout WFEC’s electrical distribution system.
