If you’re a Jackson County resident, do you ever wonder what your community will be like when your kids grow up? Do you ever feel like decisions affecting your community are made without you? Do you worry that changes in the county could change what you like about living there? If so, you should get involved in Imagine Jackson, the Jackson County vision project.
Imagine Jackson is a process by which all the county’s citizens can come together to define what kind of county they want for the future – theirs and their children’s. In a world of rapid change, the question for every community is how that change will occur. In a community without a vision for the future, change can cause important community values to disappear or be altered forever. But, when change happens within the framework of a vision, values are retained for future generations.
Through Imagine Jackson, Jackson County citizens will have a means to:
Influence, instead of merely react, to change
Focus diverse aspirations on a common goal, rather than arguing
Embrace their assets and address their liabilities
Learn from the experiences and viewpoints of others.
A county vision also can be used to:
Direct the comprehensive plan and zoning code
Direct where capital improvements are made
Stimulate tourism and other eceonomic development activities
Protect important cultural and environmental values
Stimulate new educational and social services initiatives
Provide incentives for new arts and cultural initiatives
Imagine Jackson has been initiated by the Jackson County Dept. of Community Affairs, in partnership with a vision committee composed of citizens from all areas of the county. Everyone who wishes to be heard may participate in the process – Residents in all walks of life, with all points of view, from all localities throughout the county and of all ages are welcome to the forum.
You can get involved in Imagine Jackson by:
Serving as a volunteer on an Imagine Jackson committee
Helping with or participating in the vision workshops and forums where the vision will be developed
Submitting your ideas by responding to the survey WFEC has inserted in the April electric bills of its members who live in Jackson County
