New feature! Veterans' View

Veterans Administration officials are in the process of announcing their selection of a site for a new community-based outpatient VA clinic in Marianna. Dr. James L. Borland, Jr., Associate Chief of Staff for Outpatient Clinics, VISEN 8, and Ray Carroll, Jackson County Veterans Service Officer, had toured five proposed facilities in late May, and Borland interviewed local physicians at that time for possible employment at the clinic. Jackson Hospital will partner to provide services not offered at the clinic, which is scheduled to open later this year.

The federal Department of Veterans Affairs has added chronic lymphocitic leukemia, or CLL, to the list of illnesses approved for service-connected compensation. The ruling means that veterans with CLL who served in Vietnam during the Vietnam War don’t have to prove that illness is related to their military service to qualify for Department of Veterans Affairs disability compensation. The decision to provide compensation was based upon a recent Institute of Medicine (IOM) report finding "sufficient evidence of an association" between exposure to herbicides during the Vietnam War and CLL.
