Virus scanner slugs the bugs
Puzzled by notifications you’ve received from "System Anti-Virus Administrator" in your wfeca.net e-mail? Never fear – These mysterious messages indicate that the virus scanner built into West Florida Electric Cooperative’s mail server is effectively protecting your computer from e-mail-transmitted viruses.
Chances are, at some time – possibly many times – you’ve received a notification stating, "A virus was found in an e-mail message sent to you. This e-mail scanner intercepted it and stopped the entire message before it reached you. No further action is required on your part." Then you thought to yourself, "Gee, thanks, Anti-Virus Administrator!"
But suppose these virus detection notifications indicate you’re repeatedly receiving infected e-mails from the same source and/or a sender unfamiliar to you. Should you inform that sender about having a virus or to ask the person to stop sending you infected e-mail? Probably not. In the first place, wfeca.net’s virus scanner sends virus detection notifications to both the recipient and the sender of infected e-mails.
Secondly, the person whose e-mail address is shown after "Reply to" in an infected e-mail or "Mail from" in a virus notification probably isn’t even the guilty party. "These new viruses actually ‘capture’ people’s e-mail addresses to show as being the sender, when it’s not actually sent by them," explained WFEC Internet Services Manager Steve Hall.
In fact, you could receive a notification that you’ve sent an infected message, and you might not even know the recipient to whom the virus was transmitted. Again, a virus has "captured" your e-mail address. However, if you receive a virus notification and you actually did send the message mentioned, most likely your computer is infected with the virus identified in the notification. If you didn’t send the infected message, simply delete the notification. For instructions on setting up a message rule in your e-mail settings to automatically delete virus detection notifications, call WFEC’s technical support at 1-866-543-3405 toll-free anytime.
