Washington County Schools seek volunteer nurses

If you are or have been a licensed nurse, and you have some spare time, Washington County schools need you. The Washington County Health Department’s school health program is one of 11 Florida counties chosen to receive a grant for the Volunteer School Nurse Project. This project will assist the six Washington County public schools in health-related services for students by using licensed, volunteer nurses.

School health nursing services reassure parents that their children’s health needs will be handled appropriately during the school day. In addition to the day-to-day medical and safety needs of healthy children, school nurses meet the additional health needs of children with chronic and complex medical conditions such as diabetes or asthma. In helping such students follow their care plans during school hours, the school nurse must be familiar with each student’s treatment regimen, including any devices or medical procedures the treatment requires. The nurses also provide education and prevention services to help school children develop healthy lifestyles.

The following are among the services volunteer school nurses can provide during the school year:

Pain and injury assessments;

Assistance with screenings of vision, hearing, height and weight and blood pressure;

Development of individualized student healthcare plans;

First aid; and

Assistance in health screening documentation and follow-up.

Volunteer nurses will receive school health-specific training and continuing education to maintain their active licenses. Contact Karen Mathis RN, at 638-6240, ext. 143, or Susie Sewell RN, at 638-6240, ext. 126, for more information.
