WWII Veterans Honored
Bill Rimes, President & CEO of West Florida Electric Co-operative presented several local veterans at the North Florida Rehab & Nursing home in Graceville with pins and certificates of recognition for their service to our country on behalf of Covenant Hospice on Wednesday, November 9. Barbara Bentley, Volunteer Service Manager with Covenant Hospice also presented Mr. Rimes with a pin and certificate of his own in appreciation of his military service in the United States Air Force. Rimes spoke about how the sacrifices of the members of WWII’s, “America’s Greatest Generation” influenced his 30-plus year military career in the United States Air Force. He retired after achieving the rank of Colonel. He said he believes that “the greatest generation that society has ever produced is this generation of individuals who are now in their late 70’s and 80’s, but remain modest and humble about what they did for the future of our country.” Rimes mentioned that not only the men who served in the military deserve recognition, but the women who stayed behind at home and began working in the factories and supporting the husbands, fathers and countrymen who were fighting overseas. Rimes’ uncle, Preston Goforth was one of these silent and humble heroes until his family found a secret diary after his recent death. Goforth kept this diary as an account of his experiences in Europe during WWII. He was a member and survivor of the invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944, and no one in his family knew this until they read the incredible tales of valor in his diary. Goforth was a sniper who acted alone behind enemy lines and helped liberate many German Jewish death camps. He was also a member of a convoy that escorted death camp survivors to South America after the war ended. Rimes feels it is important to recognize these heroes and pay tribute to them for risking their lives and serving our country to protect the many freedoms we enjoy today. “These individuals are truly examples of “America’s Greatest Generation” and we owe them our thanks each and every day.” West Florida Electric salutes all the veterans in its service area and thanks them for the sacrifices they have made while serving and protecting the rights of all Americans. |
