Wfec Warns Consumers to Beware of Fraud

Residents of Holmes & Washington Counties in WFEC’s service area, have recently been targeted by con artists.

Two white males approached a home in Holmes County on the basis of “lowering the resident’s utility bill.” When allowed inside the home, the men asked for a sum of money in return for their services. Later, when the residents left their home to retrieve the money, the men returned and burglarized the home.

WFEC would like to remind our member-owners that employees of WFEC have photo identification badges, and should be able to present this identification when asked. WFEC employees working outside the office typically drive white vehicles bearing a WFEC logo. Contractors who perform WFEC’s meter reading will display a Communication Manpower, Inc., or CMI, logo on their trucks, while contractors WFEC utilizes from MasTec also have their logo clearly marked. Beware of individuals driving unmarked trucks, even if they wear hats or seem knowledgeable about electrical equipment.

If anyone approaches you claiming to work for or be affiliated with WFEC, and you are in doubt, please contact WFEC at (850) 263-3231 or (800) 342-7400 to verify the employee’s identity.

Also be suspicious of anyone who is representing a business you have not requested to come to your home or have contacted you via phone.
