As a decorated Vietnam veteran and retired Air Force colonel, West Florida Electric Cooperative CEO Bill Rimes has been called a hero for his service to his country. Now he’s looking for others to wear the title in service to their community.
Rimes and other community leaders have joined with the American Red Cross Central Panhandle Chapter to launch the "Heroes of the American Red Cross" campaign in Jackson County. The campaign will promote Red Cross services and raise money to offset emergency financial assistance for victims of disaster within the county. Similar grassroots campaigns will follow in other nearby counties.
Rimes, along with Florida Public Utilities Marianna Division Manager Mark Cutshaw, is chairing the Jackson County "Heroes of the American Red Cross" fundraising and awareness initiative. As campaign chairs, they are supporting the Red Cross humanitarian mission to help Jackson County residents live safer and healthier lives and to relieve suffering in the face of disaster.
In the spirit of this mission, four co-chairs who have pledged to assist the "Heroes" campaign are Victor Vickery, City of Marianna Public Works Director; William Long, Campbellton-Graceville Hospital Administrator; John West, Jackson Hospital Administrator; and Ted Tyus, Jackson County District Commissioner. Through their collaborative efforts, this leadership team will recruit 36 individuals to serve as "Heroes."
In turn, each of these "Heroes" will raise $1,000 to be used for community-wide services and disaster assistance in Jackson County. Individual "Heroes" may work alone or may involve their company, civic club, church, school or other organization in their fundraising efforts. An individual, organization or business also may choose to donate the needed $1,000. An Individual or company interested in serving as a "Hero for the American Red Cross" should contact any campaign chair or co-chair.
The Red Cross is a humanitarian organization led by volunteers and guided by its Congressional Charter to provide relief to victims of disaster and to aid in prevention, preparation for and response to emergencies.
