65 years, 65 memories

To commemorate West Florida Electric Cooperative’s 65th anniversary, we continue our list of 65 randomly-selected highlights from Cooperative history. We at WFEC hope you’ll be entertained, inspired and informed as you join us in remembering some of the events that have shaped our co-op and our community.

16. First WFEC member signs up -- 1937

A. L. Williams, Sr., one of the Co-op’s original trustees, has the distinction of collecting the first membership fee from Mr. Dock Peel, who operated a rural grocery store at the corner of Tri-County Road and Hwy. 77, between Chipley and Graceville. Tragically, Williams is killed in a traffic accident in 1938, shortly after receiving notice that WFEC hads enrolled the percentage of membership necessary to acquire federal Rural Electrification Administration assistance to build powerlines. One of the first locations to receive power from WFEC, Dock Peel’s store becomes a community gathering place on Saturday evenings, when neighbors from all around come to listen to the radio.
17. WFEC changes weekend office hours --1965

WFEC announces its office in Graceville will remain open all day on Saturdays from the first to the fifteenth but will begin closing on Saturdays after the fifteenth of each month.
Today, through services such as online bill payment, off-site bill payment points, bank draft bill payment, 24-hour service center dispatching and continuous Internet technical support, WFEC can more conveniently and cost-effectively meet members’ needs anytime, any day, including weekends.
